Pilot Application underway at Seattle City Light

The Seattle City Light (SCL) resource portfolio is comprised of both hydro generation and contractual resources. SCL owns and operates four important hydroelectric projects on two rivers -- the Boundary plant (1038-MW) on the Pend Oreille River; and Ross (450-MW), Diablo (159-MW) and Gorge (198-MW) plants on the Skagit River. In addition, SCL has integrated in their network the Stateline Wind Project generation (175 MW) and a few other external hydro energy sources such as a portion of Priest Rapids, and the Grand Coulee Project Hydroelectric Authority.

LT Vista has been set up and is run periodically to project long-term operations and guides the short-term operations. ST Vista is also used to detail the operating plan for the current week, on an hourly resolution.

During the test application period, SCL staff members are using these scheduling tools to understand how they can assist in meeting the City of Seattle load in the most reliable and economical way, while still meeting environmental constraints on operations like fish habitat protection; and also to guide the most advantageous deployment of energy surpluses.
